What is Kairos?

Kairos is a retreat opportunity for juniors and seniors in high school. It is a chance to take time away from their everyday lives (school, extracurricular activities, family, and friends) to reflect on who they are, what they believe, and their relationship with God. This is a teen-led, but adult-guided retreat. Most students who attend Kairos find it to be a powerful and often life-changing experience. They leave with a very tangible sense of God at work in their lives.

What do you do?

At a Kairos retreat, teens hear witness talks from their peers. They listen to talks, participate in small group discussions, take time for individual reflection, and participate in the sacraments of Eucharist and Reconciliation. It is our prayer and hope that those who go on the retreat come to a deeper understanding of themselves, their values, and their relationship with God.

Who leads the retreat?

Each Kairos has a leadership team comprised of students who attended a previous retreat and an adult mentoring team. The Kairos student leadership team is generally made up of 8-10 seniors who have already attended a Kairos retreat. They complete an application, attend training sessions and team building activities before the retreat, as well as recruit other teens to come. Adult volunteers also make up part of Kairos team.

Where is it?

Kairos #2 will be held at Cabrini Retreat Center in Des Plaines from Thursday, Feb 9th-Sunday, Feb 12th.

How much does it cost?

The cost for the 4-day, 3-night retreat is $300 which includes all meals, lodging, supplies, and transportation. However, finances should not deter anyone from attending. Scholarships can be made available. Contact Agnes Knott for more information.

Why Should I go?

Consider other teens’ feedback about the power of Kairos:

“I didn’t know many people going into Kairos, but going on the retreat is one of the best decisions I have ever made. Kairos was full of powerful experiences that helped me connect to my peers and also to my faith. I made many lasting friendships on the retreat while also developing a more personal relationship with God.”

“Because of Kairos, I can truly say that I found my faith and got a different look at God. The leaders tell how they saw God through their eyes, and encourage the retreatants to keep growing in their faith.”

“While on Kairos I learned much more about my faith than I had ever thought possible. I was able to see God in everyone around me, and the amount of love I received from everyone there was incredible. Kairos has had a huge impact on my life today and I continue to grow with the help of all the amazing things I learned on this retreat. I would recommend Kairos to anyone, no matter the amount of religion you have in your life you will see God in a whole new way. “

“I have made so many new friends on Kairos, and I’ve realized that everyone we meet has some hard things in their lives. I have learned to be more grateful for the blessings in my life and to be less judgmental about the people I meet because I realize that we all have our own stories.”
